What does “FRS” mean?

FRS radios use the Family Radio Service, or FRS.  The FRS is a 2-way personal radio system that has been approved for use in the United States since 1996.  Since it uses the UHF (ultra high frequency) band, it is not affected by the interference that plagues the lower-frequency CB (citizen’s band) or the 49 MHz band occupied by cordless phones, toys, and baby monitors.  FRS radios also use FM rather than AM radio frequencies.

Radio Shack proposed the FRS in 1994 for exclusive use by families, but the FRS has also been increasingly appropriated by the business world as a more economical alternative to the business band.
