What is a Weather Radio?
Author: WalkieTalkie-TexasRangerA weather radio is equipped to receive the signal required to pick up official transmissions from NOAA and NWR. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) provides Weather Radio All Hazards (NWR) as a public service to the continental United States and its territories. NWR is a nationwide network of radio stations that broadcast continuous weather information, including official warnings, watches, and forecasts, directly from the National Weather Service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
NWR works with the FCC Emergency Alert system to provide comprehensive weather and emergency information. This includes natural disasters, environmental issues such as chemical spills, and public safety information, such as Amber Alerts or 911 telephone service outages.
What does “FRS” mean?
Author: WalkieTalkie-TexasRangerFRS radios use the Family Radio Service, or FRS. The FRS is a 2-way personal radio system that has been approved for use in the United States since 1996. Since it uses the UHF (ultra high frequency) band, it is not affected by the interference that plagues the lower-frequency CB (citizen’s band) or the 49 MHz band occupied by cordless phones, toys, and baby monitors. FRS radios also use FM rather than AM radio frequencies.
Radio Shack proposed the FRS in 1994 for exclusive use by families, but the FRS has also been increasingly appropriated by the business world as a more economical alternative to the business band.
